  1. Do you know of any inexpensive cold sore remedies?
I have a huge cold sore on my bottom lip, does anyone know of any remedies? Abreva is way too expensive!

    • I put rubbing alcohol on mine until it scabs over and then I use a constant coating of neosporin because I consider it a wound at that point. Be careful to not get the alcohol in your mouth if you do this though – especially don’t swallow it! (I actually start with the alcohol as soon as I feel the first tingle.)

I agree … abreva is too expensive and I don’t believe that it really works – not for me anyway. If you get these often, get a prescription from your doc. Makes them go away really fast.

  2. What does herpes in your mouth feel like? is it okay to use Aberva on something that may not be a cold sore?
i have a thing on my lip, it started out like a cut but i picked at it and its been greenish yellowish, it looks infected. i dont know if this is a cold sore or what. it hurts and is not getting any better. I can NOT look like this, i need it gone ASAP. any help? should i get neosporin? it might be a cold sore so i wa thinking abreva

    • A herpes sore generally hurts. There can be a tingling or itching sensation a day to a few hours before the sore actually develops.

It is possible that your sore is NOT herpes though. Here’s what an oral herpes outbreak DOES look like. If you do have a fever blister or cold sore…going to a pharmacy and getting Zovirax can help.

Now, there are two types of herpes simplex virus. Type 1 usually causes oral herpes, or cold sores. Type 1 herpes virus infects more than half of the U.S. population by the time they reach their 20s. Type 2 usually affects the genital area

Some people have no symptoms from the infection. But others develop painful and unsightly cold sores that last for a week or more. Cold sores usually occur outside the mouth — on the lips, chin, and cheeks, or in the nostrils. When they do occur inside the mouth, it is usually on the gums or the roof of the mouth.

There is no cure for cold sores. Medicines can relieve some of the pain and discomfort associated with the sores. These include ointments that numb the blisters, antibiotics that control secondary bacterial infections, and ointments that soften the crusts of the sores.

Some people get mouth ulcers when they first come into contact with HSV-1 virus. Others have no symptoms. Symptoms usually occur in kids between 1 and 5 years old.

Symptoms may be mild or severe.

They usually appear within 1-3 weeks after you come into contact with the virus. They may last up to 3 weeks.

      Warning symptoms include:

Itching of the lips or skin around mouth
Burning near the lips or mouth area
Tingling near the lips or mouth area

Before blisters appear, you may have:

      Sore throat
      Swollen glands
      Painful swallowing

Blisters or a rash may form on your:

Many blisters are called an “outbreak.” You may have:

Red blisters that break open and leak
Small blisters filled with clear yellowish fluid
Several smaller blisters may grow together into a large blister
As the blister heals, it gets yellow and crusty, eventually turning into pink skin

  3. Will neosporin help with a cold sore scab?
I woke up Saturday with a massive cold sore on my upper lip. I’ve been applying abreva to it (alot) and I think I got it passed the blistering stage. I bought some neosporin and I want to know if that will work. I have to go to work tomorrow at 530 am and I can’t miss. I need this thing gone.

    • I don’t believe the neosporin will help, as that is antibiotic (against infection) and I don’t think there would be an infection. Lysine, both in diet, and rubbed on helps a lot. (I don’t know ‘abreva’)

  4. What do you do after a cold sore scabs up can you put some neosporin on it? Or leave it be? ?
I have this big scab over it and when I shower it tends to peal off. I’ve used so many home remedies to get rid of it and most have helped with the healing process.
I lost my abreva and don’t want to spend $15 more on a new one if this one is almost gone!

    • Remember that the virus that causes those sores like injured tissue so each time you tug at the scab, it can cause the sore to last longer. Also keep in mind that the virus can get on your fingers and invade other areas of susceptible tissue such as your eyes, your nose, pimples, scratches, etc. Wash your hands well after touching them. At this point keeping the scab soft is important, it is past the stage where medicine will actually affect the lesion. Use neosporin (unless you are allergic to sulfa drugs) then use Bacitracin instead, or anything that will keep it soft.

If you get these frequently, talk to your dentist about a prescription pill that you can take the moment you feel a cold sore starting, you take it for 3 days and the sore barely becomes visible (if at all) and goes away right away… no scab, no mess. The RX is called Valtrex (yes it is the same medicine used for genital herpes but is used slightly differently). It works much differently and much more effectively than Abreva. Good luck!

  5. How long are you supposed to use Abreva?
Ive been using Abreva on a cold sore for a couple days. I think its starting to heal (but Im not sure). Is there any point when I should stop using the Abreva (it seems kind of harsh). Also, anything I should use to speed up the healing process…..like neosporin or something, to counter the harshness of the abreva?

Any other “tips” would be appreciated. Thanks :)

    • If it is a true cold sore it is a Herpes simplex 1 and neosporin will do nothing for it since it is a virus and not a bacteria.
you would be better off and get faster results by taking lysine several times a day and using any moisturizing lip ointment. It would also be a whole lot cheaper. you can buy a truck load of lysine for the cost of 1 Abreva tube
I have gotten these sores all my life(I am 57) and when I started using Lysine to combat them, I rarely get them any more. Lysine inhibits the virus and when you feel the first sign of itch/tingle and take at least 1200-1500 mg of lysine, you can often stop them from even erupting.
I started using lysine about 30 years ago and never am without it.
Be aware that any lip ointment you do use,. if its the tube stuff that you rub on your lips, must be thrown or you will start the cold sore all over again. I always apply with a clean finger so I do not have to throw it out.

  6. How can I get rid of my cold sore scab fast!?
So I’ve had this cold sore on my upper lip for about a week now. It’s past the blistering stage and now I’m in the scabbing stage. It’s been 3 days since it scabbed and it looks horrifying! So I want to know what I can do to speed up the healing process. Please help me out here! I don’t want no “just let it heal naturally” or “nothing can help” answers. At least tell me something that could help.

I’ve used abreva during the outbreak now I’ve been using carmex chap sticks, neosporin, and vasaline on my scab. I don’t use them all at once, just from time to time with a different product each time I apply more on my scab. So what can I do to get rid of this scab faster?!

    • Have you tried tea bags? Just let a tea bag steep in hot water for a min ( not to hot) sqeeze out excess water and place on scab for 20 min.

  7. What is causing the rash around my sons mouth and lips?
Its been going on since August. It first started with a rash that led to scabs on the side of his mouth. (Thought it could be a cold sore. Abreva did nothing) It finally cleared (with neosporin) and it started on the other side. That scared and cleared (using Nystatin), but now his top lip is breaking out like a really bad chapped lip. The nystatin starts to work and now it seems like its rashing his whole mouth. We have no insurance, so I’m looking for home remedies. Can anyone help?!

  8. What’s a quick way to get rid of cold sores?
I’m looking for a quick way (without medicine) to get rid of a cold sore.

  9. What would you recommend for a cold sore?
I got a cold sore early this morning like 5 am! I put the medicine I have on it, twice! Nothing has happened! I now have two cold sores and I’m very upset! I want it gone buy tomorrow so I don’t have to go to school with it! Also because my lips are killing me! So does anyone have a method they use or a certain medicine? Mine is called Lysine +

    • I have that abreva crap but it doesnt work. With clean hands and a sanitized needle i poke a small hole in it and hold a cotton ball of peroxide on it till it bubbles up. then i take a dry cotton ball with a dab of neosporin on it. it will not go away by tomorrow but it will stop hurting so bad and wont be so swollen. cold sores are highly contagious so make sure you wash your hands afterwards.

  10. Do you think my cold sore will be gone in time?
I’m using Abreva AND I’m taking Valtrex! I caught the sore pretty early, but it still came in and it’s so icky and nasty looking. )’: I feel uglyy.

I’m hoping it goes away in time for the Monday after spring break ends, because I wanted to go back to school looking REALLY pretty..

Basically, do you think if I’m taking pills for it AND using Abreva, will my cold sore be gone in three days?

    • If it is an actual sore right now it will probably not be completely gone in 3 days. The fastest way to get rid of it: If it is still big (not dried out) get some campho phenique-it’s in the store next to the chapstick and stuff. Use that untill the sore dries out, using chapstick sometimes so your lip doesn’t end up with a huge red spot. Once the sore is dried out, then use Abreva AND Neosporin alternately to heal the scab/redness. For future reference-always keep a thing of Campho Phenique with you if you get cold sores often. As soon as you feel tingling or a bump on you lip, use it and it will prevent a sore from forming. I’ve been through this alot and trust me-this is what works.

  11. How to reduce swelling from a cold sore?
I woke up yesterday morning with a cold sore. I’ve been putting abreva on it, and icing it for the pain. The problem is, my lip is huge and the swelling is not going down. It makes talking and eating difficult and it is not very nice to look at. I’ve been icing it for hours, but it still isn’t going down. The swelling is so bad, I’m staying home from school today. I can’t keep missing school, so what can I do? Please help!

    • well most people will tell you not to pop it, but i aways pop mine and put herpecin L on it right after and the swelling goes down almost immediately. I also might put neosporin on it after just to take some of the redness and pain away. That’s what I do it it goes away in about a day or so
